How to extend laptop battery life
Battery life drops with age, but good habits and a few settings slow that decline and stretch each charge.
Get more from each charge and slow battery wear with the right power settings, charging habits, and a battery health check.
Before you start
- Battery saver: Start with Windows power settings and screen brightness.
- Cool charging: Heat is one of the fastest ways to age a battery.
- Battery report: Use it to compare design and current capacity.
- Replacement check: Many laptop batteries can be replaced.
Follow this order
Turn on Battery Saver
Enable Battery Saver in Settings and lower the screen brightness. The screen is the biggest battery drain.
Use a balanced power mode
Pick a balanced or efficiency power mode for everyday work. Save high-performance mode for when you need it.
Close background drains
Quit apps you are not using, and check Task Manager for anything busy in the background.
Keep it cool
Heat ages batteries fast. Keep the laptop cool and off soft surfaces while it charges.
Charge between 20 and 80%
Avoid draining to 0% or sitting at 100% for days. Partial charges are easier on the battery.
Check battery health
Generate a battery report to see wear. If capacity has dropped sharply, a replacement restores runtime.
Good to know
- To see real battery wear, run "powercfg /batteryreport" in Command Prompt and open the saved file.
- A heavily worn battery is replaceable on most laptops. Ask us about your model.
Common questions
Should I leave my laptop plugged in all the time?
Occasional is fine, but constant 100% and heat shorten battery life over months.
Why did my battery get worse suddenly?
Cold, heat, or a recent heavy workload can reveal the wear that was already building.
