How to install drivers after Windows

After a fresh install, some hardware may not work fully until drivers are added. This order avoids the common gaps.

After a fresh Windows install, get Wi-Fi, graphics, sound, and the touchpad working in the right order with official drivers.

Before you start

  • Model number: Use the exact model from the base sticker or System Information.
  • Internet access: Ethernet or hotspot helps when Wi-Fi is missing after install.
  • Windows Update: Install pending updates before hunting individual drivers.
  • Restart window: Plan one or two restarts after driver installation.

Follow this order

  1. Get online first

Plug in an Ethernet cable or use a phone hotspot if Wi-Fi has no driver yet. You need internet to fetch the rest.

  2. Run Windows Update

Open Settings, then Windows Update, and install everything. Windows finds most drivers automatically.

  3. Install the chipset driver

Download the chipset driver from your laptop maker support page. It helps Windows recognise the rest of the hardware.

  4. Add graphics drivers

Get the display driver from Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA, or from the laptop support page, for a smooth screen and video.

  5. Fill the gaps

Open Device Manager and look for any item with a yellow warning. Search the support site by your exact model for that driver.

  6. Reboot and verify

Restart, then confirm Wi-Fi, sound, touchpad, and the brightness keys all work as expected.

Good to know

  • Always download drivers from the laptop maker official support page, searched by your exact model number.
  • Avoid random driver updater tools. They often bundle unwanted software.

Common questions

Where do I find my model number?

Check the sticker on the base of the laptop, or search "System Information" in Windows.

Windows Update found most drivers. Do I still need the maker site?

Usually yes, for graphics, card readers, and function keys to work fully.
