How to install Windows 11

A clean install clears years of clutter and gives you a fresh, fast system. You need an 8GB USB drive and your files backed up before you start.

A clear, step-by-step clean install of Windows 11: back up, make a bootable USB, boot from it, format the drive, and finish setup.

Before you start

  • 8GB USB drive: Use an empty USB drive because setup will erase it.
  • File backup: Copy documents, photos, and work files before formatting.
  • Working internet: Needed for updates, drivers, and activation after setup.
  • Charged laptop: Keep the charger plugged in during installation.

Follow this order

  1. Back up your files

Copy documents, photos, and anything important to an external drive or cloud. A clean install erases the system drive.

  2. Make a bootable USB

On a working PC, download the Media Creation Tool from microsoft.com and use it to write Windows 11 to an 8GB USB drive.

  3. Boot from the USB

Plug in the USB, restart, and tap the boot menu key (often F12, F9, or Esc). Choose the USB drive from the list.

  4. Choose Custom install

Select "Custom: Install Windows only" so you get a clean setup instead of an upgrade that keeps old files.

  5. Format the drive

Delete the old system partitions, select the unallocated space, and let Windows create fresh partitions automatically.

  6. Finish setup

Follow the prompts for region, account, and privacy. Then install drivers and run Windows Update.

Good to know

  • Check your laptop meets the Windows 11 requirements (TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot). Most laptops from 2018 onward qualify.
  • Keep the laptop plugged in during the install so it does not shut down midway.
